With calcium citrate that your body can easily absorb
Calcium helps to maintain strong teeth and bones. Our Calcium Plus tablets are made with calcium citrate, they are easily absorbed and well-tolerated. We have also included vitamin D3, which helps to increase calcium absorption. Following weight loss surgery, most bariatric surgeons will recommend that their patients take calcium as part of their supplement regimen to help ensure optimal nutritional health.

Supplements may help you to get adequate amounts of essential nutrients. However, supplements should not take the place of the variety of foods that are important to a healthy diet.
- Take as recommended by your physician with sufficient water.
- It is recommended that you take the calcium tablet separate from your daily multivitamin or any iron-containing supplement. Iron and calcium should be separated by a minimum of 2 hours between doses.
- If you take calcium and iron at the same time, it will likely decrease the absorption of the iron in your multivitamin or the iron supplement.
- Tablets can be easily broken in half to make them easier to swallow if they are too large or you are early post-op.
Take as directed by your physician as a dietary supplement. You should not take more than 2 tablets per dose period to optimize calcium absorption. Wait at least 2 hours between other doses of calcium. Wait at least 2 hours between calcium and iron or iron-containing supplements (e.g., multivitamins that contain iron). Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. This product is not suitable for children under the age of 18 years.
If your physician has recommended that you take 1,200-1,500 mg of calcium per day from supplements, you will take two tablets of Calcium Plus three times per day, which equates to 1,386 mg of calcium citrate per day. For a 90-day supply, you will receive 12 boxes (45-count) of Calcium Plus. This equals 540 pieces per 3 months.
Did your physician recommended that you take 1,000 mg? Order Calcium Plus – 924 mg Ca/d instead of Calcium Plus 1386 mg Ca/d.

When calcium and iron are taken at the same time, calcium makes it harder for the body to absorb the iron and you may increase your risk of an iron deficiency. Most bariatric patients do require iron following weight loss surgery to prevent an iron deficiency. Some multivitamins contain iron, so be sure to take your calcium separate from your multivitamin. In addition, if you consume dairy foods, wait two hours before taking your multivitamin that contains iron or any other iron supplements.
You can only absorb about 500-600 mg of calcium per dose period. This is why it is recommended that you split multiple calcium doses by at least 2 hours. Even if you take 1,200 mg of calcium at one time, your body will still only absorb somewhere between 500-600 mg.
Calcium citrate is preferred for bariatric patients for multiple reasons. It can be absorbed in a low-acid environment. After weight loss surgery, you don’t have as much stomach acid as you did prior to surgery. Calcium carbonate requires stomach acid to be absorbed and therefore isn’t as bioavailable following weight loss surgery. It also tends to cause less kidney stones when compared to calcium carbonate due to the inclusion of the citrate. Furthermore, calcium citrate tends to be tolerated better when compared to calcium carbonate. Patients generally state citrate is more gentle on the stomach and less constipating. Lastly, calcium citrate doesn’t have to be taken in regards to meals. Calcium carbonate must be taken with meals and since there are multiple doses generally required of calcium this can make it more challenging to meet calcium recommendations. Calcium citrate can be taken with or without food.
Calcium is an important marker for doctors to check, but interestingly, it doesn’t tell us anything about bone health. To truly evaluate bone health, your doctor will likely evaluate vitamin D levels and parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels. These two lab evaluations combined with calcium help to give a better picture of current bone health and determine recommendations for calcium and vitamin D3.
